Women's Festival Dance

Sua Nacha

सुआ नाचा

A parrot, a circle of women, and a season of homecoming.

About

Sua Nacha is performed exclusively by women during the Teeja and post-monsoon festival season, dancers moving in a circle around a small clay or brass parrot (sua) placed at the centre, singing verses about longing for one's maternal home.

History

The dance is tied closely to Teeja, when married women traditionally return to their parents' homes, and the sua — the parrot — is thought to carry messages between the two households. It survives today mainly through village-level gatherings and a small number of dedicated teachers working to keep it alive among younger performers.

Styles

Courtyard Sua

The intimate, small-group form performed within a household courtyard during Teeja.

Community Sua

A larger circle performed at a shared village ground, often judged informally between neighbouring hamlets.

Mandar · मांदर

A barrel-shaped clay or wooden drum, the heartbeat of Karma and Sua dance gatherings across rural Chhattisgarh.
