About
Devar Dance is a lively wedding-season folk dance performed by the groom's younger male relatives (devar), mixing improvised comic footwork with call-and-response teasing aimed at the bride's side of the family.
History
Less a formally codified tradition than a living wedding custom, Devar Dance has absorbed influences from film choreography over the decades while keeping its core structure of loose, competitive, good-natured showing off intact — it remains one of the few folk forms nearly every Chhattisgarhi household still practises informally.
Styles
Baraat Devar
Performed in the wedding procession itself, typically the more energetic, crowd-facing variant.
Mandap Devar
A calmer version performed closer to the ceremony space.
Instruments
Dafda · डफड़ा
A large frame drum central to Raut Nacha and Karma, played standing while dancers move in circular formation.
Timki · टिमकी
A small kettle drum played in pairs, adding a high, quick counter-rhythm to Raut Nacha processions.
