Call-and-Response Folk Song

Dadariya

ददरिया

Two singers, one field, and a question that never quite lands.

About

Dadariya is a couplet-form folk song tradition sung as a call-and-response duet, historically between men and women working adjoining fields, using the distance between them as part of the performance. Verses are frequently improvised on the spot, built around teasing, longing or gentle argument.

History

Dadariya developed as work-song, sung to pace long hours of field labour and to carry messages — romantic, comic or pointed — across open ground where a raised voice was the only microphone available. It remains one of the most widely sung folk forms in the state, performed both informally and on festival stages.

Styles

Field Dadariya

The original improvised call-and-response style, sung across working distance without instrumentation.

Stage Dadariya

A rehearsed, instrument-backed arrangement developed for festival and recording performance.

Instruments

Harmonium

A hand-pumped reed organ used to carry melody in Pandwani narration, Dadariya duets and stage Nacha.

Bansuri

Bamboo flute occasionally woven into Dadariya and film soundtrack arrangements for a pastoral, open-field colour.

Regions

Durg-Bhilai, Rajnandgaon, Bastar
