Ballad Storytelling

Bharathari

भरथरी

A king who gave up his throne, sung by the very few who still can.

About

Bharathari is a semi-devotional ballad tradition recounting the legend of King Bharathari, who is said to have renounced his throne to become an ascetic. Performed solo or in pairs, usually accompanied by a single stringed instrument, its melodic phrasing sits somewhere between folk song and formal recitation.

History

Once performed widely at fairs and religious gatherings, Bharathari has narrowed to a small number of active practitioners in recent decades as audiences and patronage for long-form solo balladry have thinned. Cultural documentation efforts in the last two decades have focused specifically on recording its remaining performers.

Styles

Solo Bharathari

The traditional single-performer form, alternating sung verse with spoken narration.

Duet Bharathari

A rarer two-performer arrangement, dividing narration and commentary between two voices.

Instruments

Ektara · एकतारा

A single-string drone instrument the Pandwani performer plays while singing and moving, marking both pitch and pulse across a solo narration.

Harmonium

A hand-pumped reed organ used to carry melody in Pandwani narration, Dadariya duets and stage Nacha.

Raipur, Rajnandgaon
